Europe's largest independent automotive parts remanufacturer, BORG Automotive, manufacturer of the DRI brand distributed in Ireland by Serfac Limited, continues to increase its focus on sustainability through remanufacturing.

The company was recently awarded “Bronze” status by Ecovadis, the world’s leading provider of sustainability ratings and also made a big leap forward in the ranking of the companies assessed overall, moving up 9 percentage points to be placed among the leading 34 per cent of participating organisations.

During 2023, BORG Automotive started carrying out life cycle assessments for all its product groups.  Remanufacturing is an important element within the circular economy and producing life cycle assessments enables the company to showcase the environmental benefits of using its remanufactured car parts over new ones.

For example, when a vehicle’s alternator, starter, or air conditioning compressor needs to be replaced, installing a DRI remanufactured part is better for the environment compared to a newly produced spare part, as the material consumption of remanufactured car parts is much lower. Using a remanufactured starter or turbocharger has been found to save 96% of raw materials on average compared to using a newly manufactured part.  In this way, BORG Automotive's circular business model contributes to a more responsible use of resources while CO2 emissions are also reduced by 40% and energy consumption by around 38%.

Serfac Limited offers an extensive range of “kinder to the environment” remanufactured components from the DRI brand which can also benefit the businesses of motor factors, garages and workshops.

Remanufactured by BORG Automotive, DRI offers eight different product groups: Starters, Alternators, AC Compressors, Turbochargers, EGR Valves, Brake Callipers, Steering Racks and Steering Pumps, all of which are remanufactured at BORG’s own production sites in Poland, the UK and Spain.  BORG only uses OEM parts for remanufacturing and all are remanufactured to match their original standard.

“Everyone involved in the aftermarket should be asking what we can do to help the environment and using remanufactured parts makes a significant contribution to reducing our carbon footprint, said Gillian Fanning of Serfac Limited.  “At Serfac, we are continuing to focus on sustainability across our entire product range.  The BORG Automotive business model has promoted sustainability and responsibility for many years and we’re pleased to be able to offer the “greener” range of DRI products to our customers, many of which have far less of an environmental impact than using newly produced spare parts.”

BORG Automotive is Europe's largest independent automotive parts remanufacturing company, taking back defective spare parts from the distribution chain and giving them new life through remanufacturing. These remanufactured parts are then sold to the distribution chain, which sells them to the garages that work directly on consumers’ cars.

A return system comparable to the bottle deposit system creates the basis for product circulation and, as well as being sustainable, it also results in significant savings for car owners by purchasing a remanufactured part rather than a new one.
