You might have thought with Volkswagen seemingly going down the practical, yet largely unexciting, ID.3 and ID.4 route, that there is little room in its future model line-up for a car carrying the iconic GTI badge. However, well aware of the GTI draw, the German car maker has unveiled what will be the first all electric VW to carry the hot hatch badge.
The ID. GTI Electric Concept was on show for the first time at the IAA Mobility event in Munich, 48 years to the day on from the debut of the very first Golf GTI at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
The new concept is based on the ID. 2, so is more Polo than Golf sized. Volkswagen says the ID. GTI Concept provides a concrete insight into how it will transport the iconic GTI label into the electric future.
Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said the new electric GTI would provide, “The perfect combination of driving pleasure and everyday usability. with the ID. GTI Concept, we are taking the GTI DNA into the electric age. It remains sporty, iconic, technologically progressive and accessible, but now with a new interpretation for tomorrow’s world: electric, fully connected and extremely emotive.”
Technical details and price details for the ID. GTI have not yet been revealed, however, it is anticipated that the car will reach showrooms by 2027.
