Although it ended in disappointment for the boys from the Waterford Schoolboy Football League (WSFL) in the Kennedy Cup held recently in Limerick, they were beaten in the final by the Dublin District Schoolboy League (DDSL) by two goals to one.
The WSFL were sponsored by Trade Link, the genuine parts site for Volkswagen, Seat, Skoda, Audi and Commercial Vehicles through Blackwater Motors in Cork. Trade Link is aimed at the independent garage workshop or body repair centre, needing a regular and timely supply of Genuine Parts for customers’ vehicles.
Blackwater Motors Tom Browne is the manager of the WSFL Kennedy Cup team and after beating the home team; the Limerick District League by a goal to nil in the semi-final, Tom rewarded that team with no changes for the final. In the final Waterford opened the scoring against the perennial favourites for the Kennedy Cup, the DDSL with a goal from a Lee O’Connor penalty after Dylan Swales was taken down in the penalty area.
However, the DDSL showed why they are always very strong, eventually breaking down tough resistance from the Waterford boys, winning out by 2-1. Dominic Peppard scored the equaliser and Gavin Kilkenny nabbed the winner, when his cross took a deflected into the Waterford net.
