This can lead to corrosion something that drum brake can avoid. In addition the drum brakes design secures the dust inside which can easily be removed, reducing the risk from particle emissions.
Step by step hydraulic systems are being replaced and ATE and Continental have a major role in this. The MK C1 by Continental was the first step towards true brake-by-wire technology, operating the rear axle wheel brakes electromechanically. Continental continues to work with vehicle manufacturers to implement brake-by wire technology on future vehicles.
