Victor Pimenta Technical Sales Advisor at Comma Oil and Chemicals, gave an interesting Tech Talk Live presentation at Mechanex, on the importance of choosing the right specification of coolant for a vehicle.
He explained that in the same way as most models have very specific oil requirements, coolant is also now becoming more specialised as vehicle technology moves on. This means that just offering one universal coolant/anti freeze is no longer sufficient for the garage looking to provide a top quality service.
Victor explained that most vehicle makers now specify a specific coolant that has a special additives package, which meets the requirements of a particular engine. He went on to say that the Comma range can meet these requirements with three specialist product types, one being silicone based, one being based on Organic Additive Technology (OAT) and one being a silicon OAT combination. These products prevent freezing and over-heating and provided enhanced corrosion protection, by laying down an advanced protective layer on cooling system components. The products also offer a five-year service life as opposed to the three-year life delivered by conventional products.
Victor said that using the wrong product with a modern engine could lead to system damage, and in some cases costly failure. He also pointed out that identifying the right coolant was simple using the Comma Workshop Guide or the website at www.commaoils.com.
