Finlands Knut Wilthil and Hanrik Borchegrevink set a new fuel consumption record when they covered 2,536.4 kilometers with one single tank of 70.93 liters of diesel in May 2012.  This is the longest distance ever recorded that a standard diesel vehicle has covered on European roads without having to refuel. The Ford Mondeo ECOnetic needed only 2.79 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers.

The ContiEcoContact 5 summer tyre designed for low rolling resistance, in the size 205/60 R 16 played a large part in the success of the tour over different types of road in Finland, Norway and Sweden. Its rolling resistance is more than 20 percent lower than that of the previous model. Both drivers pointed out at the end of the record tour that even untrained car owners could be driving with a reduced fuel consumption: "While driving, you should always make sure that there is enough space between you and the car in front. Whoever is in a hurry and continually accelerates and then brakes, doesnt really gain time, but instead, drives up gas consumption."

Frank Larsen, Technical Director of Continental tyres in Norway: "This top performance is the best evidence of how far we have come in the last years in the developement of energy efficient tyres."
