For the third time in five years, Stephen Daly yesterday won Ireland’s most historic motor race, the Leinster Trophy, at Mondello Park.

For the first half of the race, the Dunshaughlin driver was content to stay behind early leader Paul Dagg, another previous winner of the trophy.

Then, Daly, who started from pole position, made his move, and pulled away from his rival, opening out a two second lead which he held to the chequered flag, adding his second win of the weekend to Saturday’s victory in the Boss Formula Libre race, in which Dagg was also the runner up.

Limerick’s Paul O’Connell held a distant third position for the first half of the main race, but he had to retire, leaving another former Leinster Trophy winner, Barry Rabbitt, to complete the podium placings.

Anthony Cross and Colm Blackburn shared the spoils in the two closely fought Formula Vee races, with David Parks and Richard Kearney doing the same in the Formula Sheane class.
