Electric cars that beat the power cuts

With an increasing number of storms causing power outages, drivers of the latest KIA and Hyundai electric models may be a little more relaxed than most when the lights go out.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 both feature V2L technology, which adapts the cars charging socket and allows appliances to draw power from the lithium-ion battery, working on similar principles to a phone power pack.

If the car is fully charged it can supply enough power to keep kettles boiled, lights on and fridges cold for a few days. It is also useful for charging devices such as phones, and laptops.

This type of technology, which also features on some other electric models in a similar form, is also useful for activities such as day trips, holidays and camping.

Of course if the power outage goes on for several days, it can create the problem of leaving electric vehicle owners stranded with a drained battery, no transportation and no power.
