The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), working in conjunction with the county councils, will this month, launch a coordinated publicity campaign aimed at deterring motorists from selecting non certified repairers to repair their vehicles.

A press release will be issued to regional newspapers in mid-September, which states in the strongest possible terms, that non-compliant repairers should not be used. It says, “Uncertified body shops are operating illegally and should be avoided.” The release also highlights the penalties for using non-compliant materials and failing to register with the local council.

The publicity campaign also highlights the reason for the regulations stating, “The re-spraying of cars is regulated to minimise harmful effects on our environment and health.”

Over the last two years certifications have dramatically increased. In January 2010 there were a total of 700 certified operators throughout the country. The EPA pursues and prosecutes unlicensed operators and encourages those who are uncertified to immediately register with their local authority.
