Josh Moffett rounded off a fine year in the Valvoline Motorsport Ireland National Forest Rally Championship by taking victory in the McKelvey Asbestos Bushwhacker Rally in Omagh.
Although he had clinched the title on the previous round, a superb performance in Omagh saw him notch up another win, and give his navigator Stephen Thornton the overall co-driver award for the second year in a row.
Moffetts Fiesta R5 finished with nineteen seconds to spare over Vivian Hamill with Desi Henry a further eight seconds back. Despite retiring from the event when he went off the road on Stage 5, Barry McKenna took the drivers runner up spot in the championship with Cathan McCourt taking third on the series, both in Fiesta R5’s.
Shane McGirr did enough to take the 2WD title in his Escort while Ciaran McPhillips who navigates for Mickey Conlon was the overall winner of the 2WD co driver award.
The Junior Category saw four drivers head to Omagh with a chance of lifting the title, and by the end it was literally the last man standing who became champion. James Wilson from Keady with Gavin Doherty co-driving in a Peugeot 208 are the Junior Champions for 2018. His three rivals all hit trouble over the course of the day, with Marty Gallagher first to go with engine failure. Mechanical problems forced Jordan Hone out at the halfway point with Derek Mackarel retiring on the last loop to see Wilson move from second to first in the standings.
