Authorities in France will delay the enforcement of fines on drivers and riders that fail to carry a breathalyser, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

The country's government had set out regulation that means anyone travelling on French roads must carry a breathalyser in their vehicle at all times or run the risk of a penalty.

While these charges were supposed to be brought from November 1st 2012 this has now been put back until March 2013. Officials stated that any motorists, excluding moped drivers, that are found to be not carrying a breathalyser will be handed an €11 penalty.

This is increasingly important for anyone planning on taking their car to France over the coming months.

Neil Greig, IAM director of policy and research, said: "The new French rule is a genuine attempt to reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents. France's lower limit means it's very easy to be over the limit the morning after as well."
