The volatile nature of the current EV sales market in Europe has prompted Chinese carmaker Great Wall Motor to announce the closure of its European HQ in Munich, with the loss of 100 jobs.
Great Wall has seen some success in recent years in Europe with its Ora 03, previously called the Funky Cat. However, increasingly tough market conditions and the prospect of increased European tariffs have prompted the closure.
The company will continue to sell cars in Europe, but the operation will be managed from China.
A company spokesperson pointed to the, "Very concrete threat of punitive taxes, creating a very high uncertainty for a company like ours with an EV portfolio."
Great Wall has also said in European markets including, Sweden, Ireland, the Baltic countries and Bulgaria, operations will now be handled by local distributors, directed by Great Wall in China.
