HELLA Ireland continues to expand its range of Triscan thermostats adding many new references including some unique aftermarket options for Citroen and Peugeot.
Automotive thermostat technology has developed considerably in recent years moving from the simple, conventional thermostat without bypass valve to thermostats built into the housing, at first in metal and later in plastic and where the temperature of the cooling water determines the opening of the thermostat. In the latest versions the thermostat is electrically or electronically controlled via the vehicle engine management.
The modern engine is expected to deliver improved performance with less weight and volume and reduce fuel consumption and emissions. This places new demands on the cooling system, including the thermostat, which has thus become more sophisticated.
The thermostat has become an integral part of the engine system delivering optimal temperature control. These new types of thermostats can have up to three or four sensors / switches built into the housing. In VAG cars with FSi and TFSi engines there are two built-in thermostats in the complete thermostat housing to regulate the engine temperature. As technology develops we will also see thermostats as a built-in and integrated part of the water pump.
Car brands using thermostats of the latest technologies include Mercedes, PSA, Opel, Renault, BMW, Ford and VAG. High quality aftermarket replacements for these marques are all featured in the Triscan programme which offers 95% car parc coverage.
