HELLA Ireland has introduced a new range of Torsional Vibration Dampers (TVD) and Over-running Alternator Pulleys (OAP).
The new range features OE products from both ContiTech and SKF and includes over 100 references to provide 90% coverage of the Irish car parc.
TVDs control noise and vibrations coming from the crankshaft and provide protection for drive belts and assemblies. If a TVD unit fails, the vibrations caused by the combustion cycle are absorbed by the drive belts directly, causing premature wear and the potential for belt failure and engine damage.
OAPs have a similar function to TVDs, also protecting the ancillary belts. However, instead of removing unwanted vibrations, the OAP allows the alternator to free wheel so that the belt does not jolt when the engine/belt speed decreases or increases suddenly, such as while changing gear. This in turn prolongs the life of the belt, prevents the belt slipping and chirping and reduces the amount of unwanted vibrations reaching any ancillary devices. If the OAP fails, it can become noisy and it will not be able to dampen the excessive vibrations that damage the belt, belt tensioner and other ancillary devices.
HELLA Ireland, ContiTech and SKF recommend that both the TVD and OAP be inspected for cracks, distortion or corrosion at every belt service and should be replaced every 120,000 Kilometres / 75,000 Miles or when there is visible damage to the belt tracks.
