German component supplier SWAG, has highlighted the importance of the correct choice when it comes to the replacement of timing chains and some of the tell-tell signs garages need to look for to decide when replacement is needed.

Timing chains have played a vital role in driving engines ever since the first cars hit the road. While timing belts have also become popular with some engine makers, timing chains have remained in favour with manufacturers such as Mercedes and BMW, as well as many Asian car makers. They have also become more popular with smaller engine vehicles made by Opel, VW and Smart, as well as featuring on many hybrid applications.

Manufacturers often choose chains over belts because of longer service life and greater wear resistance. In design terms, timing chains also offer the additional advantage that they enable the bridging of large gaps between components and the transmission of large forces.

Quality and performance are essential considerations for replacement timing chains and SWAG stocks only original IWIS chains in its range. IWIS is the market leader in this field, with more than 90 years of experience in engine timing. All chains are “Made in Germany” and in addition to competitively priced standard versions, the range features high-quality reinforced products for chains under particularly high loads.

Chains, when lubricated properly should be virtually maintenance-free. However, often due to problems with other components, chains can be subject to stress and will need checking and possible replacement. SWAG has highlighted some factors to look out for to recognise this:

• Chain noises (e.g. rattling or chattering)
• Timings are out or there is a loss of engine power (chain has stretched severely)
• Chain tensioner is completely worn out (only visible when dismantled)
• Implausible signals from camshafts and/or crank angle sensor
• Engine is already stripped and replacement would prevent consequential damage and repairs

SWAG also say that when replacing a timing chain, that the associated components must be replaced as well. These include guide rails and clamping rails, the chain tensioners and the sprockets. The quality and workmanship of these components is critical for the chain drive’s safety and durability.

Original timing chain kits by SWAG are complete repair kits with chain tensioners, rails and sprockets. Fitting should be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, using the recommended tools. Timing chains require good lubrication for a long lifetime. It is therefore extremely important for trouble-free function to check the engine oil level regularly and to comply with the maintenance intervals specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Use of the correct oil grade is also a must as with the wrong oil, the chain and especially the guide rails may quickly wear.

SWAG offers a comprehensive range of OE quality timing chains, kits and associated products. Full details of the range can be found at www.swag-parts.com.
