Black box style cockpit recorders similar to those used on airliners are being introduced by Honda in Japan, and could find their way on to European cars within a few years. The company says it has perfected a drive recorder that detects impacts and saves the information preceding and following a crash.
Data comes from a 135-degree camera mounted on the car's windscreen, while sound and data on speed and acceleration, is recorded onto an SD card. All the information can then be uploaded to a PC for analysis. Honda hopes this new innovation will encourage safer driving, however, it also recognises that the device has the potential to revolutionise insurance claim procedures.
The Drive Recorder is available in Japan for Â¥55,000 (around €350) and is only applicable for Honda vehicles.
