Development Engineers at Jaguar Land Rover are pioneering new technology which it hopes can reduce driver distraction and improve safety. The company says it is working on an intelligent self-learning vehicle that offers a completely personalised driving experience.
The technology utilises the latest artificial intelligence techniques and thanks to a new learning algorithm can recognise who the driver is and learns their preferences and driving style. Software can then take over the daily driving 'chores', allowing the driver to concentrate on the road ahead.
Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology for JLR, said, "Presenting the driver with information just at the right time whilst driving will reduce both cognitive distraction and the need for the driver to look away from the road to scroll through phone lists, or adjust mirrors, temperature or seat functions while on the road." He added, "We want to deliver a completely personalised driving experience and enhance driving pleasure."
The intelligent car will recognise the driver by the smartphone or other device in their pocket and by the time the driver has opened the car door, the mirrors, steering wheel and seat settings will all be set to the individual's preferences. The car will also be pre-set to the desired temperature.
Through a ‘Smart Assistant’, the car can also review a driver schedule for the day and intelligently pre-set the navigation depending on traffic conditions to avoid congestion. The car will even recognise if a driver is heading to, or from, the gym and adjust temperature settings in the vehicle so that the driver can “warm-up” or “cool down”. The assistant will even remind you when it is your children’s sports day so that kit is not forgotten.
