A recent Blue Print ProTip explains the proper installation process for various Kia and Hyundai timing belt tensioners.

Problem
This timing belt tensioner needs to be set correctly during the installation process. If this is not followed, it can cause the timing belt system to fail.

Cause
Removing the load pin too early influences the operation of the tensioner dramatically, which leads to premature failure and to possible engine damage.

Solution
As shown in figure 1, install the new tensioner and tighten the installation bolt (1) to 55–60 Nm. Loosen the Allen key bolt (2). Turn the tensioner counter-clockwise using the hexagonal shape. (3) Slowly turn the engine two revolutions clockwise.

As shown in figure 2, the Allen key bolt should now be in the top position of the slotted hole. Ensure that the timing marks are aligned and then tighten the Allen key bolt to 10 Nm. Remove the tensioner retaining pin. The tensioner should now be set in the correct position.
