Tributes flowed aplenty for the late Murray Walker who died this month at the age of 97.
Murray Walker was the voice of Formul1 for over 50 years on both the BBC and ITV from his first broadcast in 1949 from Silverstone until he retired twenty years ago. The US Grand Prix at Indianapolis was his final race in 2001.
Martin Brundle, who commentated alongside Walker in the final years of his career, led the tributes on social media.
Writing on Twitter, Brundle said: “Rest In Peace, Murray Walker. Wonderful man in every respect. National treasure, communication genius, Formula One legend
James Allen, who succeeded Walker in the commentary box at ITV, said: “Deeply saddened to learn of the death of my mentor Murray Walker. Just shy of his century. We lived some great experiences together on the road, many laughs and endless stories. A life incredibly well lived.”
Walker wasn’t just a Formula One commentator. In all, while he covered more than 350 grands prix, he also covered more than 200 Isle of Man TT and senior Manx motorcycling events, and countless other categories from powerboat races to motocross and speedway.
