Mercedes-Benz is to introduce a new Automatic Lane Change (ALC) function on certain European models.

Previously the system was only available for cars in the US and Canada, however, the company is currently working on adapting the function to European roads. It will be first utilised on the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

According to Mercedes ALC is “an integral part” of its adaptive cruise control and active steering assist systems. It means the vehicle can automatically initiate a lane change, and overtake completely all by itself, when it detects a slower vehicle ahead. The function will be limited to motorways and dual carriageways and will only be available in conjunction with MBUX Navigation package. As a SAE-Level 2 autonomous driving system, the driver remains responsible for the car’s action and must hold the steering wheel.
