Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian Detection, is the new pedestrian safety technology from Volvo, which will be introduced with the all-new Volvo S60, recently launched in Ireland. The technology can detect a pedestrian in front of the car and will brake automatically if the driver doesn't react in time, a world first.
Speaking at the launch of the new S60, David Baddeley, MD, Volvo Cars Ireland, said, “…Volvo is the first car manufacturer in the world to develop and use this groundbreaking pedestrian safety technology and have it as a feature in the new S60, every car should have it.”
In Ireland, there have been 23 pedestrian fatalities to date this year and pedestrians account for approximately one in every five fatalities on Irish roads.
Noel Brett, chief executive of the Road Safety Authority, said, “We welcome the pedestrian protection system which Volvo have introduced for the first time. However, public policy needs to promote improved vehicle protection features for pedestrians and Government policy should encourage car manufacturers to incorporate safety features such as pedestrian detection as standard, with the use of vehicle registration tax and VAT rates and even attractive insurance discount for cars and fleets who possess these safety and protection features.
