Car Race action returns to Mondello Park this Sunday, August 14th, as a number of National Championships build towards their conclusion.
The Carlow Car Club will be in charge for a fifteen race programme on the National Track made up entirely of saloon and sportscar classes. Each of the classes on the bill will race twice apart from the Legends which will have their usual three races.
The biggest grids of the day will be filled by the two Mondello Park promoted Fiesta Championships, the Patch Tyre Equipment Fiesta ST series and the Procraft Tools Fiesta Championship. The ST series has grown steadily since its introduction this season and has produced fantastic racing with almost twenty cars taking the start last time out. Sean Lillis, with two wins to his name, leads the way from fellow double winner David Maguire and former Fiesta Champion John Denning, with just six points separating the top three.
The Zetec engined Fiesta series which is backed by Procraft Tools has not suffered from the introduction of the ST series and is still producing very healthy grids and close racing. Philip Lawless leads the way having dominated the top step of the podium with five wins from six starts. His nearest rival is Michael Tumulty, the only other driver to win this season, but he is more than thirty points adrift.
Continuing the saloon racing theme will be the ever expanding micksgarage.com Future Classics championship. The series for saloon cars of all types and ages is home to some of the closest racing ever seen at Mondello Park due to its use of a barrier time which equalises the performance of the wide variety of machinery on the grid. Spectators will be treated to a double dose of Future Classics as the budget class has a rare double header.
More Saloon action will be provided by the Teng Tools Irish Touring Car Championship which is being dominated by the beautifully prepared Golf of Grzegorz Kalinecki with the reigning Production class champion proving to be the class of the field on his move up to the Touring Class. Also on the bill will be the Legends Cars with their own brand of frantic dicing, Global Lights sportcars and Ginetta Juniors.
Qualifying for Sunday's event takes place from 09:00 with Racing from 11:00. Admission is just €12.50 for adults, or €10.00 if booked in advance from mondellopark.ie, with under sixteen's admitted free.
