Capri on the comeback trail?
An iconic Ford Capri

The Ford Capri will be remembered fondly by drivers of a certain age, as an iconic coupe, that was an object of desire through much of the 1970s and 80s. Like many other famous motoring names it seems it could be in line for a comeback, this time in the guise of an all-electric crossover.

Although not yet officially confirmed, it is thought that Ford bosses are planning to use the Capri name as part of its future electric model line-up. The expectation is that the new Capri would be a sporty crossover, with Capri type curves, that would be in contrast to the rather boxy new Ford Explorer.

Ford has said it is planning to launch seven new electric cars and vans by 2024, and the speculation is that the new Capri could fit between an electric version of the Puma and the Explorer SUV.

While bringing on board new electric vehicle technology, Ford is also keen to highlight it motoring heritage and build on brand loyalty. It has already done this with the Puma and Mustang names.

The original Capri was produced in three main model forms between 1968 and 1986. Ford sold the car under the strapline, “the car you always promised yourself”. Its appeal was also helped by sporting success on the track and its use in popular TV shows, such as Minder and the Professionals.
