Mechanics often assume that a timing chain has a very long service life and will rarely require changing. Whilst it is true that timing chains last much longer than timing belts, they are subject to wear and do require checking and changing periodically.
As the chain wears, it stretches and can cause the timing to run out. This can cause a variety of noises which range from rattling to whirring, whining or buzzing.
Other signs the timing chain is worn include:
- engine feels sluggish,
- engine is down on power
- engine has trouble starting.
The wear pattern of a timing chain will be greatly increased if the engine is not lubricated correctly with the right specification of oil. The oil level should be frequently checked and topped up if necessary to avoid timing chain issues and other problems.
It is vital that the timing chain is replaced at intervals recommended by the manufacturer, as failure can cause severe damage to the engine. If the timing chain is worn, it is good practice to replace it as a kit with a new tensioner, guides, and other parts of the chain drive mechanism.
febi supplies a range of almost 300 timing chains. The company says it supplies these in OE matching quality complete repair kits which also include chain tensioners, rails and sprockets.
