Peugeot has confirmed it will bring to market a GTi hot hatch version of its new 208 supermini. The 200bhp GTi version will make its debut at the Paris Motor Show later this month and its commercial launch is scheduled for spring 2013.
The 1,160kg 208 GTi features a six-speed manual gearbox and turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine with 200bhp and 203lb ft of torque, resulting in 0-100kph acceleration in less than seven seconds. CO2 emissions are rated at 145g/km.
Visually, the 3-door model is 10mm wider at the front and 20mm wider at the back and it sports new headlamps, side sills, swollen wheel arches, a new grille with chrome inserts, 17" alloy wheels, twin chrome exhaust pipe and a GTI badge on the mesh. Inside, black leather upholstery is finished with red stitching and the two-tone motif continues on the seats and on the dashboard. A high mounted instrument panel houses brushed aluminium dials.
Marie Beaumont, 208 GTi Product Manager, said: "The 208 was an excellent base for developing a sports hatchback. We have worked with particular attention on the steering response, the chassis dynamics and the rigidity of the suspension. The 208 GTi successfully combines performance, safety and driving pleasure."
Prices and final specifications for the Irish market will be confirmed closer to launch.
