A shortage in skilled technicians is perhaps one of the biggest future challenges faced by Ireland’s Motor Industry, so any channels that provide a route to jobs, training and education in the industry are vital. While apprentice programmes provide the most obvious route into the sector, many colleges around Ireland are also offering post leaving certificate courses that can provide a vital introduction into vehicle technology. One such establishment in Dublin is Plunket College, which offers a popular QQI Level 5 course in Motor Technology.
The course lecturer is Robert Ledwith who explains that the one year course gives participants a valuable insight in to vehicle mechanics as well as broad base of other knowledge and skills. He comments, “The course provides an introduction into motor vehicle theory and practical hands on experience of working on cars and auto electrics. As well as this there are modules in maths, communication, art and design, IT and health and safety.” He adds, “The students also do work experience in workshops and so get a real feel for the industry and if it is the right career path for them.”
Roberts says that one of the most satisfying aspects of his job is seeing how students, who come not just from schools but from a range of backgrounds, flourish and develop during the year. Many then embark on apprentice programmes within the industry, while others go on to further education and degree courses related to the automotive sector. He says, “The course has opened up some fantastic career opportunities for many students, giving them their first taste of this fast changing industry.”
Robert, together with Principal Adrian Delaney and Vice-Principal Principal, Elaine O'Sullivan, has worked hard to develop links between the college and the industry and is always keen to hear from garages who are willing to offer students work experience, something which is often a key step in introducing new young talent to the industry. He says, “We are always keen to talk to employers to find out what they need and make them aware of the education we can provide. We feel it is vital that the motor trade and the education sector works together to secure a prosperous future.”
