To allow automotive technicians to work safely in hazardous environments, where flammable gases may be present, Ring Automotive has introduced a new ATEX torch which conforms to the latest strict European safety regulations.

Flammable gases, mists or vapours, can cause explosions if correct precautions are not taken. If there is enough of the substance, mixed with air, then all it needs is a source of ignition to cause an explosion. Two European Directives, commonly called ATEX, are now in place to mitigate explosive situations in the workplace. The directive ATEX137 is to protect workers from explosive environments while Directive ATEX 95 concerns standards of equipment intended for use in these explosive environments.

Potentially explosive environments are often present in vehicle workshops. Examples include vehicle paint spraying, fuel and chemical delivery as well as fuel storage. Indeed simple actions such as draining a fuel tank can be highly dangerous in a confined area.

For added safety Ring has launched the ATEX Torch. The torch has been specifically engineered and designed to be intrinsically safe for use in hazardous locations, by preventing a source of ignition. With a rating IIC T4 it classed as zone 0 Hazard safe  and so is suitable for use in work areas containing gases and vapours such as Acetylene Hydrogen.

To prevent any source of ignition Ring’s ATEX torch has two key features. The first is that it includes a gas release valve built into torch handle, so the battery is not exposed to hazardous vapour. The second feature is that there is a fastener that locks the torch head and prevents lamp exposure in hazardous conditions.

The torch itself has a tough robust construction and a virtually unbreakable polycarbonate lens to ensure that it withstands the tough working conditions. It also produces 200 lumens output for a bright illuminated work area. From the 4 x AA batteries the torch has an operating time of 50 hours.

Ring’s ATEX torch provides the solution for business owners to take the necessary precautions to protect their employees and make hazardous working environments as safe as they can be.

The Ring Automotive range is available from stockist nationwide and is distributed in Ireland by Strongline Autoparts.
