Safety firsts on new Volvo XC90

Volvo’s new XC90 SUV is to include several world firsts in new safety technology with a special focus on accident prevention.

The newly release details of the safety systems featured on the model, which goes on sale later this year, means the seven seat SUV will not only be one of the safest cars in its class, but possibly the safest ever made.

The headline feature is a ‘junction brake’ system that stops the car if the driver tries to pull out in front of an oncoming vehicle at a junction. The XC90 also has a system that will flash its tail lights if sensors detect another car is likely to impact the rear of the vehicle.

Also available will be an automatic city braking system, which recognises not just other vehicles, but cyclists, pedestrians and even animals with an advanced exposure camera meaning the system works just as well at night as in daylight.

Other features include road sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring and automatic parking, the car can even drive, brake and steer itself in slow-moving traffic. There is also an option for an integrated booster seat which pops-up when needed for young children.
