Just a couple of days ago, Autobiz reported on Nissan's arrival on the London Taxi scene. Well, Mercedes-Benz is fighting back with claims of their own.
Mercedes are on the attack, reporting super sales figures for its Vito taxi. Mercedes say that it now has 40% of the market for London taxis and claims it is going to become the number one choice. There is bound to be a territorial war and there are worries that the traditional London Cab, now manufactured in China since 2010 might become a rare sight on the streets of London.
Now might be a good time to go shopping for a London icon as some might become a collector's item in the not-too-distant future. Boris Johnson, Mayor of London has ruled that all taxis over 15 years old must be withdrawn from service from next month, while some local councils in London are urging a tougher 10-year limit. This should have led to a surge in orders for the traditional black cab, but now the new kids on the block are eating into sales.
Already, London Taxis are taking action ahead of the new rules. Over 1,000 black cabs have been shipped to Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, home of the recent Eurovision Song Contest.
