Truck driver safely rescued from dangling cab

It is the type of scene you might see in an action movie. A 36 tonne articulated truck hanging precariously over a river 25 meters up. In the films, amazingly the driver usually manages to escape without injury. In this instance the scene is 100% real and, amazingly, the driver was rescued without injury.

The incident took place near Louisville, in Kentucky on the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge. Louisville Metro Police said the Sysco articulated vehicle was in an accident that caused the truck to crash through barriers, leaving the cab dangling 70 feet above the Ohio River.

Unlike in the movies, the driver simply didn’t climb up to safety, but had to be rescued by the fire department in a long and painstaking operation. He was eventually hoisted to safety, pretty much injury free.

No doubt the driver has quite a story to tell and probably will not be driving over any bridges any time soon.

You can see local news coverage of the rescue below.
