Uber expands San Francisco self drive

Uber, the ride-sharing technology company, is to expand its self-driving car pilot programme using a fleet of self-converted Volvo XC90 SUVs on the streets of San Francisco.


Volvo and Uber signed an agreement in August 2016 to establish a jointly owned project to develop fully autonomous driverless cars and this moves marks the latest development in the alliance. The cars are built by Volvo and Uber’s own self-driving hardware and software package is then added.

Mårten Levenstam, vice president product planning at Volvo Cars commented, “The promise of self-driving ride sharing is becoming a reality. Volvo is proud to be at the forefront of the latest developments in the automotive world alongside our partners at Uber.”
