Bodyshops under the RMI umbrella in the UK have written to MEP´s urging them to help support the improvement of the legal framework for competitive repair and maintenance of automotive vehicles. In particular the association is keen to see the continued supply of critical information needed to safely repair vehicles and protect consumer’s rights of choice.
Jason Moseley, director of RMI Bodyshops commented, “We believe that the legal framework for competitive repair and maintenance information needs improving. We have written to MEPs and also asked our members to get involved and write to their committee MEPs, so there is a very strong and aligned message sent from the body repair sector.”
Access to manufacturer data was secured in 2007 to ensure that all vehicles could be repaired to EU safety standards. However, the RIMI says that these provisions need urgent updates, especially in relation to open access to on-board diagnostics. The association want to ensure that independent multi-brand diagnostic and testing tools are able to accurately communicate with the vehicle using standardised communication protocols.
