UK Service chain failed to spot 11 out of 20 defects on Trading Standards car

The UK service chain Halfords Autocentres, faces a fine of £32,000, plus £14,862 costs after its branch in Filton, Bristol failed to spot 11 out of 20 defects on a Vauxhall Astra which was covertly presented for a full service by trading standards authorities.


The Astra had a long list of faults, some safety critical, such as missing light bulbs, irregular tyre pressures, oil leaks and faulty windscreen wipers. It was taken to the service chain outlet by South Gloucestershire Council, where a fee of £235 was agreed for the full service.

A North Avon Magistrates Court hearing was told that it was obvious that not all the checks were carried out even though they were ticked on the service check list.

Halfords pleaded guilty to eight counts of breaching consumer protection laws and the mechanic responsible for the service has since resigned.
