Car maker Volvo, which is well known for its safety innovations, has developed an inflatable child seat concept which overcomes many of the common problems that parents encounter with existing designs.

Fifty years after Volvo first developed the rear facing car seat, the new inflatable design is said to be quick and easy to use, as well as being lighter and more compact. The seat has a built in pump that fully inflates it in 40 seconds. Parents can remotely activate the inflation system by using a smartphone thanks to built-in Bluetooth functionality. The seat is made from drop-stitch fabric for high strength.

Volvo says the new design will appeal to parents because it is portable and easy to fit. Many car seats are currently too bulky to easily be moved between vehicles and there are concerns that in many instances seats are fitted and adjusted incorrectly.

As yet there is no word on when or if, this design concept will make production.
