Volvo has taken a minimalist approach when it comes to the design of its new XC90 and it could spell the end for dashboard knobs and switches.
The centre of the new XC90 dash features a large tablet-style screen, which replaces buttons and knobs normally in the drivers reach. To access the cars systems, drivers will use this touch screen, plus steering wheel controls and voice activation.
On the screen a stack of tiles will divide up in-car functions into navigation, media, phone and notifications. Climate controls will be anchored to the bottom of the screen.
Dr. Peter Mertens from Volvo Research and Development says, “Using the screen is so logical that it will become part of your muscle memory very quickly. Information, navigation and media are high up and easy to check. The phone controls, application icons and climate controls are located low and are comfortable to reach and touch. All of this logic is based on extensive usability and user experience research and the latest technology.”
The new touch system will be called Sensus Connect. The new XC90 will also feature the new Apple CarPlay concept. This is a system co-developed between carmakers and Apple, which allows an onboard infotainment system to mirror Apple’s operating system straight from a mobile device.
