Volvo stresses windscreen replacement safety

Volvo Cars is stressing that when it comes to replacement of windscreens on its vehicles, garages and bodyshops cannot afford to compromise on Volvo original quality.

A Volvo windscreen is not only a critical component for the cars structural integrity, affecting the way a car deforms in a collision, but also a key element in the vehicles advanced accident avoidance systems.

Arthur Power, who oversees Volvo’s Trade and Body Development programme says, "It is key that Genuine Volvo screens, adhesives and methods are used to return the car to its original specification. Volvo tests products and procedures very stringently so that they meet the most rigorous safety standards.”

Also due to the nature of the technology used in relation to the camera and laser, it is vitally important to replace body glass on a like-for-like basis because the glass type is known by the safety modules in the car. Certain calibration values derive from glass type, mass and thickness. If replacement glass is not a genuine, this could affect the ability of the City Safety system to function correctly. Heat insulating (IR) glass in particular, such as on the Volvo V40, can affect the functionality of City Safety if non genuine aftermarket glass is fitted. The software of the safety functions is also fine-tuned to each windscreen variant and demands extremely stringent optical tolerances in order to function as intended.

Arthur stresses that adhering to the correct replacement methods and calibration procedures is also vital. He comments, "Volvo approved workshops use Volvo trained technicians, strict methods, genuine screens and special materials including advanced adhesives. This means the replacement can be carried out in the shortest safe drive away time, which can be as little as 3 hours.”

Recalibration of the on-board safety systems is the final procedure and this requires special tools and activation procedures that are only available through VIDA, the Volvo workshop information system. A 45 minute road test also takes place to ensure optimum system performance.
