Young Daniel Kelleher from Mogeely, Castlemartyr, Co. Cork, produced a super performance at the first round of the IAME X30 Euro Series in Zuera, Spain.
Kelleher, who is just 11 years old was competing in the Mini X30 class for 8-12 year olds.
In testing on Wednesday and Thursday Daniel was always among the fastest times in both wet and dry conditions and in qualifying on Friday, Daniel qualified 3rd out of 49 drivers in wet conditions.
Saturday consisted of three heats, with championship points awarded at the end of the heats and again for the final. Driving with style, Kelleher took a clean sweep on all the heats on Saturday.
The final heat was held on Sunday morning with Daniel just needing to finish in the top 5 to stay at the top of the heats classification. He drove a controlled race and finished 2nd giving him the maximum 21 championship points available and a 4 point lead over nearest rival, Henry Domain. It also gave him pole position for the final. In the final Daniel utilised his pole position advantage and held the lead, with British driver Jesse Phillips on his back bumper. Kelleher and Phillips pulled away from the rest of the pack and despite Phillips' best efforts, Kelleher held on to win the final by just .073 of a second.
The win gave Kelleher another 25 points and he finished the weekend with a maximum score of 46 points and a 12 point lead over nearest points rival, Phillips.
The next round of the IAME X30 Euro Series will take place in Belgium on the 5th to the 8th of May.
