Reports in the UK media suggest that automated convoys of lorries could be appearing on European roads as early as next year.

Under the system the lorry convoy is controlled by the lead driver who is responsible for acceleration, braking and steering, with other vehicles electronically linked. This would mean that vehicles could travel much closer together, theoretically creating more space on the roads, whilst also reducing fuel consumption through a better aerodynamic profile.

Motoring organisations have expressed concern that convoys could block exits on motorways and intimidate drivers, however, it is expected test will take place in the coming months.

Swedish lorry maker Scania has been testing this type of technology on Swedish roads since 2012. The UK Department of Transport is expected to OK trials after studying the Swedish test results.
