German carmaker Audi has announced that it will build a new Formula 1 power train at a facility at its Neuburg plant, ahead of entering the grid in 2026. This will be done in partnership with an existing team which will be named before the end of the year.
With Formula 1 already having plans in place to run on synthetic fuel from 2026, Audi will target the start of this season as its starting date, thus effectively entering on a level playing field with the existing engine suppliers.
The move will help Audi to raise awareness of its electrified powertrains and synthetic fuels with a wide global audience as the sport moves towards greater electrification and advanced sustainable fuels in an effort to be carbon neutral.
Markus Duesmann , Chief Executive Officer at Audi, commented, “Motorsport is an integral part of Audi’s DNA. With the new rules, now is the right time for us to get involved.”
The news comes as another Volkswagen brand, Porsche, has already announced plans to join the high profile sport in conjunction with Red Bull Racing.
