Ireland’s Robert Barrable and partner Aaron Mason claimed RCIB Insurance Racing’s first British GT4 Championship win in a rain-sodden Silverstone 500 race in June.
Heavy rain ensured the three-hour, 500-kilometre contest started under Safety Car conditions, but the Irishman’s rallying pedigree became apparent in the wet and greasy conditions with Barrable eventually taking the chequered flag 18 seconds clear of the next best GT4.
The Irishman’s rallying pedigree then became apparent in the wet and greasy conditions before his partner Mason climbed back aboard. Another perfectly executed stint followed but, again, the team’s decision to delay its final stop in an effort to see out a short, sharp rain shower before switching to slick tyres paid dividends.
In a race that was interrupted several times by the Safety Car and numerous pit stops, a combination of stopping a lap later than most of his rivals and vagaries of the Safety Car’s position on track helped Barrable to make up half a lap on the rest of the field, enough to give him an advantage which he maintained to the end.
