Bike safety message goes Ariel

It generates 350bhp, weighs just 612kg, and will get to 60mph in 2.5 seconds. It is also a Police car so you might want to think twice before trying to out run it. The even stranger part of this is that the brand new Ariel Atom 3.5R is not on patrol on the city streets in Dubai, but the leafy lanes of Somerset in the UK.

The Avon and Somerset Constabulary has just unveiled the Atom as the latest addition to its fleet. It is not designed for high speed pursuits, but to promote the Safer Rider campaign, which is aimed at increasing awareness by and for motorcyclists. The Atom was chosen because the campaign organisers thought it was the most “bike like” car on the road.

Sergeant Andy Parsons who heads up Safer Rider, comments, "Motorcyclists make up just 1% of total road traffic but account for nearly 20% of all road user deaths. They are roughly 35 times more likely to be killed in a road traffic collision than someone in a car and we really want to see these numbers reduced."
