Ford to introduce adaptive steering technology

Ford is to add adaptive steering technology to some of its models from next year. This advanced feature has up to now been typically found mostly on luxury vehicles, but will soon be standard on all larger Ford models, including the new Edge Crossover.

The system improves driving dynamics by varying the amount of steering effort required by the driver based on the speed of the vehicle. At low speeds, it requires less effort from the driver, making parking easier. At higher speeds, the system smooths steering input to make the car feel more stable.

Ford say that an actuator placed inside the steering wheel means that the technology can fit in any model. This means its introduction does not require changes to its traditional steering mechanisms and should therefore mean a reasonable cost.
