Having been along to see me almost a year ago with the same issue the owner of this 2011 BMW 520D, had a problem with his rear view mirror. It had become detached from the windscreen and had fallen down, suspended only by the wiring.
When I looked at it a year ago, I realised that the metal fixing plate had become detached from the glass, and informed him that the best option was to get the plate bonded back in place by a windscreen replacement company. They normally have the proper resin needed and this will be far more effective than anything I could do.
He popped back in a week later and told me he had managed to fix it back himself using an adhesive he had purchased from eBay. Happy with the result, he has admittedly been driving around for the past year OK.
Fast forward to the first hot day of the year, when the motor was parked in the direct sunlight. The BMW owner went back to his motor, only to discover the rear view mirror hanging by the wires, having dropped off again.
This time when he popped into my garage, he asked where the nearest screen fitters were and so I pointed him in the right direction.
