Compliant bodyshops and paint suppliers are being urged to maintain the pressure on unregulated operators by the EPA.

Non compliant solvent based paints continue to find their way on to the market and although numbers appear to be reducing, there are still repairers who continue to operate without valid certification from their local authority. The EPA says anyone aware of such activity should report it the National Environmental Complaints Line.

Dr Ian Marnane, Senior Inspector at the Office of Environmental Enforcement at the EPA, says that changes made to the environmental regulations covering bodyshops have been well received. In particular, reaction to the new National Panel of Approved Assessors has been positive and the new inspection regime seems to be working well. Working with local authorities, the approved assessors have encouraged many bodyshops, which previously were not certified to become compliant.

Ian says, "We feel that the national picture is continuing to improve, but we are also aware that non compliant activity continues to take place both in the sale and use of non compliant product.” He adds, "We would urge all concerned parties to report any non-compliant refinishing activity they are aware off to the National Environmental Complaints Line.”

The National Environmental Complaints line number is 1850-365-121. Information on the regulations, approved assessors and best practice guidelines can be found at www.decopaints.ie.
