In what may be the final roll of the dice for Alfa Romeo, parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is asking Ferrari for help as part of its latest effort to transform the struggling brand into profit.
According to sources in Milan, the plan is to develop a new line of rear-wheel-drive cars and SUVs to take on BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. New models will start to hit the market in 2016, and high-end versions will be equipped with engines developed by sister brand Ferrari.
Although sales of Alfa Romeo cars have been plummeting in recent years, Fiat bosses are determined to give it one last chance. There are signs of a recovery in Europe and Fiat armed with more resources since the takeover of Chrysler, plan to invest one more time in a new line of cars.
It could be the end of the road too for the current MiTo and Giulietta models that account for over 90% of Alfa’s current sales.
Fiat are planning to use Jeep’s international dealer network to sell the new models. Expect more news next month at the Detriot Motor Show.
