A recent febi ProTip provides a possible answer to some Ford C-Max (07-10), Focus (04-12) and Turnier (04-12) ABS warning lamp faults.
Problem The anti-lock brake system (ABS) warning lamp is illuminated, and the following fault codes are logged into the ABS module:
- C1141 front left wheel speed sensor/ring gear defective
- C1142 front right wheel speed sensor/ring gear defective
Cause The wheel speed signal to the ABS system is lost due to excessive front wheel bearing movement and inadequate fitment of the bearing in the wheel knuckle assembly.
Solution Replace the defective wheel bearing, ensuring that the mating surface in the wheel knuckle assembly is thoroughly clean and dry and is free from grease, debris, and corrosion. To prevent the bearing from moving in the wheel knuckle bore when installing the new bearing, clean the contact surface and apply a thin film of sealant, such as a thread lock (26709 or 26710), to the mating surfaces of the bearing and wheel knuckle bore before pressing the new bearing into the knuckle.
After assembly, reset all fault codes and test to ensure the brake system's correct operation.
