Iarnród Éireann, the company that runs Ireland's passenger and freight rail services, recently took delivery of a new batch of Ford Transit models.

With the addition of the new vehicles, Iarnród Éireann runs a fleet of Ford models including the 2 tonne Transit, the smaller Transit Custom and the Transit Connect.  Iarnród Éireann uses the Ford Transit models for the maintenance of the rail network around the country.  The Ford fleet is used by Iarnród Éireann teams that are spread throughout the company's 28 depots across the regions.

According to Tom Heffernan, Iarnród Éireann's Road Fleet Manager: "The Transit family of vans are the ideal vehicles for our work.  They are highly dependable with low running costs and our teams love the flexibility that they provide for carrying both personnel and equipment."

In addition to looking after the national rail network, Iarnród Éireann is also responsible for the operation of Dublin's DART commuter rail network and all the operations of Rosslare Europort,

Ciarán McMahon, Chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland, said: "Iarnród Éireann has been a great supporter of Ford vehicles over the years and we are sure that these latest Transit models will continue to get the job done.  Transit arrived in Ireland in 1965 so the nameplate is celebrating its 50th birthday this year.  In that time, Transit has been consistently the number one choice of fleet managers and trades-people in Ireland".

Renowned for its functionality, reliability and low running costs, the latest Transit Custom is also the first and only van in its segment to have achieved a maximum 5-star safety rating by Euro NCAP. Two of its innovative technologies, Lane Keeping Alert and Ford SYNC® with Emergency Assistance, also received Euro NCAP Advanced rewards for technology: the first for any commercial vehicle in history.
