The Today with Pat Kenny Show on RTE Radio One gave some valuable exposure to the independent aftermarket sector on Thursday July 26th. It tackled consumer rights in relation to two key issues, the free choice of repairer when it comes to insurance repairers and warranty implications in relation to the choice of who carries out mechanical repairers and servicing.
The Show's Consumer Affairs expert, Tina Leonard gave a very interesting overview of the situation with regard to insurance companies steering customers towards their approved repair network. She stressed that despite the advice given and sometimes financial inducements offered, consumers do have a free choice as to who repairs their vehicle. She also expressed concerns voiced by many repairers regarding constant cost reduction in relation to insurance work and the possibility of future quality and safety implications as well as highlighting some of the anti competitive steering practices sometimes employed by certain insurers.
The summery advice she offered motorists when it comes to insurance repairs was:
- Remember that if you are getting your car repaired under insurance you can choose to get a quote from your own local repairer if you want.
- You might be swayed by the offer of a hire car or other incentives, but remember you still have a choice, and should not be put under any undue pressure or other tactics with regard to that choice.
- If you have a complaint against an insurer, complain to them first and if it remains unresolved, go to the Financial Services Ombudsman.
The other area of concern discussed by Tina and Pat was the fact that under EU rules motorists can get their car serviced anywhere and buy their parts anywhere without any manufacturer warranty implications, provided the parts used are of a set quality. It was explained that 2010 EU laws mean car manufacturers cannot make warranties conditional on repairs and servicing being carried out within their authorised network. The complex issue of manufacturer, original and aftermarket parts was also covered. It was explained that motorists can have OEM parts and parts of matching quality fitted to their vehicles and maintain their vehicle warranty and that this has the potential to make big cost savings.
The broadcast makes interesting listening for anyone involved in the independent aftermarket and hopefully will help to promote greater free consumer choice when it comes to mechanical servicing and body repairs. You can listen to a podcast of it by
