The independent garage sector in the UK continues to increase its market share according to the latest Castrol Professional Car Servicing and Repair Trend Tracker Report.
The latest figures show that in 2013 the independent sector took 50% of the market up from 46.3% in 2012. The franchised dealer aftermarket share was steady at just under 25%, with the independent growth seemingly coming from a reduction in DIY work due to increased vehicle complexity.
The total market for service, maintenance and repairs was estimated at £9.88 billion in the UK in 2013, 3% down on the corresponding figure a decade ago, but almost 10% up on the 2008 figure at the start of the economic downturn.
The report also indicates that independents are also benefiting from an aging car parc with cars between six and thirteen years old on the road increasing by 33% between 2004 and 2012, and those over 13 years-old increasing by 31%.
