Despite its well-documented problems on the track, McLaren Automotive has major plans to enter the prestige sports car market and aims to introduce its first new road cars by 2011.

The road car company, which is now independent of the racing team, says its aims initially produce 1,000 models per year by the end 0f 2011, eventually rising to 4,000 per year by 2015.

The first model off the blocks will be the P11 supercar, a successor to the iconic McLaren F1. It aims to appeal to buyers of cars such as the Ferrari F420, while a coupe to rival the Porsche 911 is also on the cards.
